The Opteka mirror lens is incredibly compact and lightweight. Using an advanced reflex design, this is a mirror lens that is ideally suited for wildlife and sports photography. It has a fixed aperture of f6.3. Opteka mirror lenses incorporates advanced computer designed optics and the latest in multi-coating techniques. The process of multi-coating assures virtually flare free photographs even under adverse lighting conditions resulting in crisp high contrast pictures with full color fidelity.

When combined with the T-mount to fit your camera system, this mirror lens mounts to camera and works on both "full frame" cameras as well as the "APS-C" style digital SLR cameras. T-Mounts are available for all the digital SLR systems, as well as for C-mount systems. However, in every case the fixed f/6.3 aperture is not communicated to the camera body. As such, you can use the lens in "M" manual exposure mode or "A" aperture-priority mode only.

This lens has a broad diameter and stocky build, making it a bit easier to handle than a normal refractor lens. It also has a much different rendering of out of focus areas than a normal lens; highlights will be doughnut-shaped rings with more saturation and contrast on the edge of the ring than on the center.

Great Lens !!
I just got this lens last week, for the money, or even at twice the cost you could not find a better 500mm lens (1000MM W/2x adapter). Very good quality mechanically. I'm using it on a Canon EOS T3, and the photos are very sharp with good color and almost zero chromatic aberration, even when using the 2x adapter at a 1000 MM. It only works with manual focus and has a fixed aperture, so you must manually set the shutter speed, or let the camera set it automatically, for proper exposure. Getting subjects into focus takes a little practice, but when you get the hang of it, it's not that difficult. It's a good idea to use a tripod when setup for 1000 MM.

Great for the Money
Use a tripod! This is a no-frills lens that requires some time to familiarize yourself with it. That said, I've got some great photos with it.

Manual focus is the only drawback
I bought this lens to put on my backup camera (dslr). I now sit on the back porch and can take pics of the wildlife from a bench. I put a monopod on the camera because it is cumbersome but with a 2X converter it is great for long shots.

Nifty Two-Fifty What a steal...
There are plenty of good reviews on this, so I'm not going to get into too much detail other than to say it is WELL worth a couple hundred bucks. (and then some) I bought it, took some test shots and blew myself away. It's surprisingly sharp, even wide open! Now, if you step down a couple and pull back on the zoom it just gets better. around 2 steps down at 200mm seems to be a sweet zone for this lens (at least in the quick testing I did). IS is very effective, and the bokeh looks great. I had a seasoned shooter who lives w/ the 70-200L f/2.8 take a look at the test shots, he was impressed as well. So, its not just me.

I do have a couple complaints.... A: It is slower... focusing full range takes some time. B: It is slower... only f/4.0 at best, so you will be shooting higher iso, longer shutters etc in lower light. But, both of those are to be expected, so I will not hold those against the lens... just like inner focus would be better etc. It's a $200 lens, you...

Great lens at a great price
Perfect addition to my Canon Digital Rebel. Adds to the range of the "out of the box" lens. Lens was new in box, no signs of the dreaded gray market or refurbished. Works flawlessly. Seller was prompt. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Great Lens for the Price
Great lens. I debated between this IS lens and the 70-300mmn std lens-very happy I got the IS. My first usage was at Disney's Animal Kingdom. It took great closeups from the Safari Ride and most were very clear, even though you were riding in an open "safari truck" over bumpy terrain. Also took some bird pictures on a nature walk and it made them look like you could reach out and touch them.

Can't wait for my next chance to use this lens.

Ridiculous Lens!
Ridiculous was an adjective used by someone I know, when other superlatives were too weak in their description. There are a couple of lenses in my arsenal that are considered by many to be reference standards. But this one even leaves those behind and has no peer - in many different aspects.

The image quality will blow you away, words are useless here, the pictures you get will astound you. Razor sharp across the entire(!) frame and bokeh that is crazy delicious - if you want that shallow depth-of-field. No distortion or aberrations to speak of. The three modes of Image Stabilization work great with 4-stops of assistance. I have been trying to post some pics of some zoo animals, but amazon has not uploaded them for some reason. However a link resides in the comments under this review.

I have a 1.4x extender and have used it with this lens with great results with regard to picture quality. The extender degrades the quality of any lens it's attached to, but...

WOW
I read as many reviews as possible before outlaying all this coin and I am totally satisfied beyond belief with the quality and capability of this lens. I only do photography for a hobby and are fortunate enough to be able to afford a lens of this quality. This lens coupled with my 5D is easily held by hand for extended periods of time. I often photograph surfing, motorsports and wildlife and coupled with the 2 x extender gives you more than enough distance for the enthusiast.

What a lens. If you can afford it then by all means get it. The focus is fast, sharpness is unbelieveable. If you have never used it, there is a bit of a learning curve on how to handle this beast but once you get some practice down with it you will be more than pleased.

For what it's worth
I picked one of these up for shooting the moon, not for any other reason. Here's some useful information on the lens. First of all it is incredibly light. My Nikon 70-300 weighs more than this lens does. Second of all, the T Mount is simple to attach, just turn it backwards on the lens and you'll feel the threads line up, then tighten it up. Most important this will work with ALL Nikon F mount cameras. However, you need to understand that this is not a CPU lens, it sends no info to the camera body. Meaning you must use it in manual mode. I set my lens to f/8 and used the manual setting on the camera to set the shutter speed. If you follow the camera meter, the shots are going to be way over exposed. So use an exposure meter, or a chart. I shot a half moon at f/8 for 1/1000 of a second. ISO 400. I'm using this on a D2H so I attached the camera to a tripod rather than the lens. Rather have a cheap lens slip than my camera. The lens is long so any vibration is going to be...

patience and a tripod
So I was skeptic about this but I decided to gamble and so far I feel like a winner! If you only shoot in Auto mode then don't buy this lens. "M" is where you got to be. There is no communication from the lens on the aperture and no light meter reading. Basically it's up to you. Just play with your ISO and shutter speed. I kept previewing shots on my LCD display and adjusted from there. Yes, it's possible to get some quality shots. You need a tripod but I shot from my car door. I will be uploading three bird pics I took this morning if I can.

Works great on my EOS T3
I bought this lens for the price point and knowing that I would not be using a 500mm full time and I was not spending $10,000-$16,000 for the Canon model. I have been a photographer for years, formerly doing professional portraits and now as mostly a hobby so I have no qualms about using a manual lens.

I tested it this last weekend after it arrived Friday on wildlife in my backyard and I have gotten some awesome photos with it! Squirrels, birds, chipmunks, etc all sharp and crystal clear. If you are not experienced with manual lenses this might not be for you but if like me you are or willing to take the time to learn this lens is well worth the money!!

Awesome add-on telephoto lens
This Raynox high definition 2.2x telephoto lens is awesome. I've used it on both a Panasonic and Kodak digital 18X zoom cameras with excellent results. The colors are brilliant and the definition is very good. Would recommend it highly.

Good but not the best!
I bought this lens for a Panasonic DMC-FZ100 camera. I already have an Olympus TCON-17 1.7X lens, but wanted a little more zoom and from reading about this lens on the Raynox web site, thought this lens would be better than my Olympus lens. Well, it wasn't. The chromatic aberration (green color fringe around any straight edge) is much worse than on the Olympus lens and this lens is soft (not crisp clear pictures) compared to the Olympus. Don't get me wrong. It is a nice lens, but it just doesn't measure up to the Olympus lens. If I didn't have the other lens this lens might have passed the smell test, but unfortunately I had something else to compare it to. I have pictures and will post them in the comments area. I also don't like the fact that the threads on the lens are plastic. The whole lens is plastic. It just feels cheap.

Update 5/3/11. After saying so many bad things about it I sent it back. After I sent it back, I started having second thoughts about the...

Good value for the money
The pros outweigh the cons and make this a good value for the money.

Pros = Good image quality, inexpensive, very lightweight (especially compared to Canon zoom lens), comes with shade hood.

Cons = Adapters, and more importantly the threads of them, are made of plastic so long-term durability is questionable.

However, I accidentally dropped the lens from 5 feet onto concrete and it didn't get a scratch, so it is quite durable.
